CNU Blog Policy

Christopher Newport University Blogs:
Acceptable Use Policy for CNU students, staff and faculty on our public blogs

The use of a Christopher Newport University (“the university”) blog is a privilege. Users and moderators are responsible for their decisions and will be held accountable for their actions. Those who are unable to conduct themselves appropriately and who negatively impact the online community may have their blog account(s) revoked.

Because these blogs are open to the public to read, please conduct yourself in a manner reflective of a representative of this school.

Criminal activity will be handled according to the statutes governing the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  1. User accounts. You are responsible for the safety of your account; i.e., not sharing your user name and password, changing your password if you know that your account has been accessed by a third party and reporting such breaches immediately to the appropriate authority (usually, the blog moderator). Only you should have access to your blog account; do not share the means to access it with your friends or coworkers.
  2. Respect. No profanity, harassment, lewd or indecent language, threats against the safety of an individual, group or property, or statements of hate, racism or intimidation against an individual or group. If found, such postings will be removed and the user who posted the content will be subject to judicial sanction by the university. Users who share their accounts with a third party who then uses the account to violate these rules may also be subject to judicial sanction.
  3. Pranks. Because of the potential for harm, pranks, hoaxes and practical jokes will not be tolerated.
  4. Advertising. Advertising for personal or third-party businesses will not be tolerated. This includes images, text and links to the business website.
  5. Solicitation. Solicitation for business, charity or personal gain is prohibited unless such solicitation is the express purpose of the blog.
  6. Copyright. No posting of images known to be copyrighted by anyone other than the posting user or by CNU unless express permission is given by the third party. Such permissions should be sent to the blog moderator for recordkeeping purposes. Copying text from another source and posting it as your original work is considered plagiarism.

I was just wondering if students’ posts are reviewed before they are posted? If not, is there an employee at the University who monitors them?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the question. The review process depends largely on the purpose of the blog and who is allowed to post or make comments.

For the purposes of this blog, posts can be made by registered members, although most entries are currently made by the director of Alumni Development. Anyone can leave comments, but spam comments are deleted. This blog has software implemented to catch most spam comments. Entries are currently reviewed by the blog’s technical admin and the director of Alumni Development.

The University has not yet implemented public blogs being used exclusively by students. This semester (spring 2007), we have three classes using blogs to facilitate classroom discussion and assignment completion. In those cases, the professor of each course is responsible for monitoring content. They also have chosen to restrict the ability to post only to students enrolled for each particular course.
